From Pam Kolega: Dear NCSSFL Members, Please see story at link below. Great piece for advocacy in your states. Forward broadly! http://www.nea.org/neatoday/0810/worldlanguages.html
Juniata College has submitted a Fulbright Group Projects Abroad proposal to conduct a 5-week seminar on the topic “Language and Culture Proficiency and Pedagogy in Guatemala” for a group of 12 to 18 Spanish and area studies teachers with intermediate proficiency in Spanish. If funded, the overseas phase of the seminar will be held from June 21-July 25, 2009. The primary host sites will be Colegio Miguel Ángel Asturias, located in the northwestern highlands city of Quetzaltenango, and Instituto Comunitario Básico Nueva Esperanza, located in the central highlands town of Rabinal. The primary goals of the seminar are to enable participants to:

improve their language proficiency through three weeks of individualized language instruction and five weeks of intensive language and cultural immersion;
develop their cultural proficiency through extensive interaction with Guatemalan families, educators and students, as well as through a variety of cultural excursions and experiential activities;
design assessment tasks and teaching materials for personal use and for use by teachers across the United States through training provided in seminar workshops on Integrated Performance Assessment and Guatemalan testimonial narrative;
establish long-term relationships of mutual support among U.S. and Guatemalan educators.

Seminar participants will be expected to attend a pre-trip orientation session on May 30th, present their final individual or group products at Juniata College’s Language and Culture Teaching Institute on August 13th-14th, and submit their final products for reproduction and dissemination by September 1st.

The Fulbright grant will cover overseas expenses, so the only cost to participants will be a $400 fee to cover additional program costs not covered by the Group Projects Abroad grant.

This program is contingent on Fulbright funding, which will not be announced until late February of 2009. Eligible participants must be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States, employed full-time as a teacher, a graduate student, or a junior or senior in an institution of higher education who is a prospective teacher in the areas of social sciences, humanities, or foreign languages. If you would like additional information or wish to receive an application if the proposal is funded, please contact Dr. Henry Thurston-Griswold, Professor of Spanish at Juniata College (thurston@juniata.edu, Tel: 814-641-3499). Prospective participants should include their home address, email address, and telephone numbers.
